SAP Completes Acquisition of Dremio to Enhance Business Data Cloud and AI Capabilities

SAP SE has officially completed its acquisition of Dremio, a prominent open, high-performance data lakehouse platform. This strategic acquisition aims to significantly enhance SAP's capabilities in handling analytical and AI workloads by allowing customers to combine SAP and non-SAP data in real-time, eliminating the need for data movement or conversion.

The integration of Dremio's serverless architecture into SAP's Business Data Cloud and SAP HANA Cloud offerings addresses a critical challenge in AI deployments: data fragmentation. By enabling a unified data environment, SAP seeks to improve cost efficiency for enterprise analytics and accelerate its agentic AI roadmap.

According to Philipp Herzig, CTO of SAP SE, the acquisition directly tackles the issue of AI projects stalling due to unready data. Dremio's technology, which operates as an Apache Iceberg-native platform, will allow the SAP Business Data Cloud to function as a single, open platform for governed, AI-ready intelligence.

SAP plans to deliver a universal catalog built on Apache Polaris and the Apache Iceberg REST Catalog API, serving as the semantic layer for the SAP Business Data Cloud. This catalog will provide a central access point for data lineage and access rights, further streamlining data management for connected engines.

The acquisition comes at a time when enterprise decision-makers prioritize data integration and AI analytics, with the enterprise software market projected for substantial growth. SAP's strengthened Business Data Cloud and accelerated AI strategy position it to capture a larger share of this expanding market.
